Banner for Snow Ball January 10th and 11th, 2019 (3 hours)

For a school dance that Smile Train was holding to raise funds for their organization/ subcommittee, a banner was needed to be a part of the decoration for the dance. It was also a good way to share with people what event is going to be happening in our school. It took a group and myself about two days after school to create the banner. On the first day, we took a long sheet of paper and painted the title on it. We also started sketching a snow globe on it. I started making a disco ball out of black construction paper and aluminum foil. On the second day, I was helping to create another disco ball. With the group, we finished up painting the snow globe, background, and pasted the disco balls. We hung it up in the cafeteria and it lightened up the atmosphere during lunch and the dance.

It was a good experience because I got to spend time with friends and acquaintances. It improved all of our group working skills, too. It taught me how to complete such a big project with many other people. It was also very good to learn how to think through large events. It made me think about all different parts of a dance or event and how to make it enjoyable for everyone and look well put together. This is a skill that could be very helpful for later in life in my personal or professional life.

Paintings for Francis Lewis HS

I have been recently enjoying painting a lot. I wanted to share what I can do with others. This would also brighten up a classroom in the school and hopefully make it a very welcoming atmosphere for the students.

This is a version of the Water Lillies that is almost complete.

For the paintings I needed to get two canvases, acrylic paint, pain brushes, and a palette knife for mixing paint. Newspapers were also important to get set up in my house in order to not make a mess. Then, I needed to set up. I spread the newspapers on a table, took a cup of water to clean the brushes, and paper towels to dry the brushes. I did this every time I had to paint to finish up these works. These items took me six hours to complete.

Here is an earlier version of the Water Lillies.

Using white paint, I went over the lilies on top of the lily pads. I was very careful to make it look like I envisioned it. I had to let that dry again. Next time, I would go over the lilies again and add some touches to the lilly pads. I was just a few hours off from finishing. With a dark pink paint, I went over some of the flowers. I mixed different shades of that color to make it look very natural and not only one toned. I did this and added a few fine details to the painting. Finally, I was done. The painting of the blossoms on the tree branch was done in a very similar manner as it is my usual artistic style.

Pamphlet, posters, and decorations for Francis Lewis HS

I wanted to create a poster that the students in Francis Lewis High School would appreciate. With some acrylic paint on watercolor paper, I decided to paint the sky and the sea. It was very impressionistic in style. I put purples, pinks, and white on a palette knife and some on the paper and just spread them around on the paper. I followed this technique for the sea. It was a very emerald sea with some blues and whites as well. After it dried, I took a marker and put an inspirational slogan on it that reads “Never Give Up!” in script font. I was happy to recreate it. I hope it makes the students smile when they look up at it. In preparation for Valentine’s Day, I wanted to create Polish style decorations for a different school community. I took a piece of nice paper, and folded. I cut hearts out in the paper. I unfolded it and it could be hung up on a wall or desk. With the cutout hearts, I wanted to make another decoration. I took little puffy sticks with wires in the middle, and cut small openings in the middle of the hearts. I strung the hearts on two different pipings. I tied the bottoms of the piping so the hearts do not fall off, and I made the top into hooks. Francis Lewis High School has a program that teaches adults who may be immigrants English. For the adult E.S.L. class, I created a pamphlet. I put a picture of New York on the front and included a title, as well as the days the classes meet. I put facts in the pamphlet that could interest the readers, such as that that Queens is one of the most diverse areas in the world as many different people from Queens speak a lot of many different languages. I hope the staff and students will enjoy reading the pamphlet before or after class.
